Without a Job - is Iowa a Good Place to Live?

Where has our common sense gone? I just read about another bill being presented in the Iowa Legislature. Democratic Senator Tom Courtney thinks it's time to create a law to force business owners to give part-time employees (20 hours or more) paid sick leave. Where does it end? There seems to be an insatiable appetite on the part of many in government (and those who hold their purse strings) for more and more control over our lives and businesses, regardless of the consequences.
So what are some possible consequences of this bill? 1) Employers give paid sick leave to part-time employees and take the additional expense out of their profits, regardless of their margins. 2) Employers limit part-time hours to 19. 3) Employers pass the additional cost on to consumers, raising inflation. 4) Employers stop hiring.
Hmmmm - I think I would bet on the last three options.
Democratic Senator Jack Hatch said, "To have a requirement for businesses in this state to have an employee benefit package is good public policy," he said, "and it sends a message to families and employees that this is a better place to live."
Really? How good can it be if you don't have a job? Really? What would be the motivation to start or maintain a business if you can't make a decent profit? Really....
